In today's BMW blog post, we will compare the new 2019 BMW X5 to the older generation 2018 BMW X5.  We will show the impressive new look of the vehicle first.  We will then discuss several performance enhancements, as well as the comfort, convenience, and safety improvements that have been made to the new 2019 BMW X5.

New Look:

The redesigned look of the 2019 BMW X5 does not go unnoticed and is a major selling point.

The photo comparison above highlights the much larger kidney grilles on the new 2019 BMW X5. You can also see that the 2019 BMW X5 has more prominent lines down the hood of the car, as well as slightly different shaped headlights separated from the kidney grilles, giving the new version a meaner, sportier, defined look.

The back of the new 2019 BMW X5 features thinner taillights, giving the vehicle a sleeker, updated look:

Performance Enhancements:

The most significant performance improvements have been made to the 6-cylinder (40i) model of the BMW X5.  The 40i model has received a brand new 6-cylinder engine, which has 35 more horsepower and 35 ft lbs more torque, resulting in a 0 - 60 time of 5.3 seconds (almost a second faster than the 2018 X5)!

The new engine provides this extra power (see chart above) while also improving efficiency. The 2019 40i X5 gets 2 extra miles per gallon on the highway.  The 50i maintains its impressive 479 ft lbs of torque and increases horsepower by 11 (up to 456 hp).  This results in a tenth of a second improvement in the 0 - 60 time, and an additional mile per gallon on the highway.

Both models see an improvement in towing capacity.  The 2018 X5's were capable of towing 5,952 lbs, whereas the new 2019 X5's are capable of towing 6,603 lbs.  With an optional factory-installed towing hitch, the 2019 X5's towing capacity could be increased to 7,200 lbs.

Comfort, Convenience, and Safety Improvements:

**NEW FEATURE ALERT**The Backup Assistant is a game-changer.  This feature remembers the last 165 feet as you approach a parking space, and allows you to back up automatically along that exact same path.  This feature is great if you have a technical, curvy driveway because the car automatically mirrors the path on which you drove in.  The Backup Assistant is part of the Parking Assistant Plus Package.

The 2019 BMW X5 comes with several safety features you would expect, including active cruise control.  The 2019 BMW X5 is so safe in fact, that it received 5 stars (the highest score possible) from European crash testing, as cited on bimmerfile.com.  Other notable features of the 2019 X5 include a heated steering wheel and new heated arm rests - these can make a world of a difference, especially during Utah Winters.

Another new feature of the X5 is that the cup holders can be heated or cooled, making for a luxurious ride with your beverage of choice.  Of course, there is a convenient wireless phone charger for the driver or passenger in front.

When the 2018 BMW X5 body style was first introduced in 2013, it was at the cutting edge of safety technology.  One of the most popular safety packages on the 2018 X5 was the optional Active Driving Assistant.  This package included features such as Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Forward Collision Warning, Daytime Pedestrian Warning, and City Collision Mitigation.

In the 2019 BMW X5, the once-optional Active Driving Assistant package is standard. Additionally, the 2019 X5 has an optional Driving Assistant Professional package.  This package includes the Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, the Emergency Stop Assistant, and the Evasion Aid.

The Extended Traffic Jam Assistantenables the 2019 X5 to navigate traffic jams on its own without driver input.  The only prerequisite is that the driver pays attention to the road ahead.  The X5 knows the driver is paying attention by using a Driver Attention Control camera that analyzes the driver's eye movements.

The Emergency Stop Assistantis an exciting new feature that allows the passenger or the driver to stop the car simply by pulling on the parking brake lever.  When the brake lever is pulled, the car will use its sensors to help the driver make the necessary lane changes to safely pull over to the side of the road. Once it reaches the shoulder, it will automatically stop as quickly as possible and initiate an emergency phone call to the BMW Assist Hotline.  If the brake lever is pulled accidentally, there is a 5 second grace period in which you can cancel the emergency stop procedure.

The Evasion Aidalso assists in emergency situations.  When the driver needs to swerve to evade an obstacle or vehicle in front of them, the system calculates the safest path, and helps the driver follow that path effectively.

The 2019 BMW X5 has risen the bar for SUV's once again and offers a leading competitive option in the luxury market, especially amongst competitors like Mercedes, Audi, and Lexus.  In the upcoming 2019 year, the BMW X5 45e Hybrid model will be introduced, as well as the X5 M model.
